Ingredients

Choose one option.

Option 1: Tomato Lime Guacamole

3 ripe Hass avocados, peeled, pitted, and diced
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro, optional
3 tablespoons finely diced onion
A few tablespoons oil, optional
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
Zest of 1 lime
1 jalapeño, finely diced
2 Roma tomatoes, diced
1 garlic clove, minced, or 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon chipotle powder

Option 2: Red Onion Cilantro Guacamole

4 large Hass avocados, peeled and pitted
2 tablespoons fresh lemon or lime juice, plus more if needed
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt or kosher salt, plus more if needed
1/2 medium red onion, chopped
1 large handful fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 jalapeño, seeded and finely diced
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon chipotle powder

Directions

Option 1: Tomato Lime Guacamole

Step 1: Mash the Avocados

Place the three diced avocados in a medium mixing bowl. Use a fork or avocado masher to mash them until the guacamole reaches your preferred consistency.

Step 2: Add the Fresh Ingredients

Add the cilantro, onion, lime juice, lime zest, jalapeño, Roma tomatoes, and minced garlic or garlic powder. Gently fold the ingredients into the mashed avocado until evenly combined.

Step 3: Season the Guacamole

Add the kosher salt, black pepper, and chipotle powder. Stir gently to distribute the seasonings without crushing the diced tomatoes.

Step 4: Add the Optional Oil

If desired, stir in a small amount of oil for extra richness and a silkier texture. Add it gradually until the guacamole reaches your preferred consistency.

Step 5: Taste and Adjust

Taste the guacamole and adjust the seasonings as needed. Add more lime juice for brightness, additional salt to enhance the flavors, or more jalapeño for extra heat.

Step 6: Serve

Serve the guacamole immediately with tortilla chips, vegetables, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, or fajitas.

Option 2: Red Onion Cilantro Guacamole

Step 1: Mash the Avocados

Place the four avocados in a medium mixing bowl. Use a fork or avocado masher to mash them until they reach your preferred consistency.

Step 2: Add the Citrus and Oil

Add the lemon or lime juice and olive oil. Stir gently until both ingredients are incorporated into the mashed avocado.

Step 3: Add the Fresh Ingredients

Add the red onion, cilantro, minced garlic, and jalapeño. Fold the ingredients together until evenly distributed.

Step 4: Season the Guacamole

Add the salt, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, and chipotle powder.

Stir gently until the seasonings are evenly incorporated.

Step 5: Taste and Adjust

Taste the guacamole and add more lemon or lime juice for brightness.

Add additional salt if needed.

Step 6: Serve

Serve immediately with tortilla chips, tacos, quesadillas, burrito bowls, nachos, fresh vegetables, grilled meat, or seafood.

Notes

Choose one option and follow its complete ingredient list and directions. Do not combine the two formulas unless you intentionally want to create your own variation.

Ripe Hass avocados are the key to creamy, flavorful guacamole. Choose avocados that yield slightly when gently pressed but are not excessively soft or mushy.

For chunky guacamole, mash the avocados lightly and leave small pieces intact. For smoother guacamole, continue mashing until the mixture reaches the desired consistency.

Fresh lemon or lime juice adds bright citrus flavor and may help slow oxidation, but it will not prevent the avocado from browning indefinitely.

For milder guacamole, remove the jalapeño seeds and membranes before dicing. For additional heat, retain some of the seeds and membranes.

Chipotle powder adds a subtle smoky flavor. If chipotle powder is unavailable, substitute a small pinch of smoked paprika for smokiness without the same level of heat.

Oil is optional in Option 1. Olive oil is part of the complete formula for Option 2.

Serve the guacamole as soon as possible for the freshest flavor and color. If preparing it ahead, transfer it to an airtight container and press plastic wrap directly against the surface to minimize contact with air.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Store leftovers promptly in the refrigerator. Some browning is natural because avocado darkens when exposed to air.
