Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Yield: One 4-ounce spray bottle

Ingredients

1 tablespoon witch hazel, rubbing alcohol, or surgical spirits
30 drops essential oil or essential oil blend
About 6 tablespoons distilled water, or enough to fill the bottle while leaving a little space at the top
1 clean 4-ounce fine-mist spray bottle

Directions

Step 1: Add the Base

Pour the witch hazel, rubbing alcohol, or surgical spirits into the clean 4-ounce fine-mist spray bottle. This base helps distribute the essential oils more evenly when the bottle is shaken.

Step 2: Add the Essential Oils

Add 30 drops of your chosen essential oil or essential oil blend. Gently swirl the bottle about 10 times to begin combining the oils with the base.

Step 3: Add the Distilled Water

Add approximately 6 tablespoons of distilled water, or enough to fill the bottle while leaving a small amount of space at the top. This extra room makes it easier to shake the ingredients before each use.

Step 4: Shake the Spray

Secure the spray nozzle tightly. Shake the bottle thoroughly to distribute the essential oils throughout the mixture.

Step 5: Use the Air Freshener

Mist the air lightly whenever you want to add a fresh fragrance to the room. Avoid over spraying, and shake the bottle well before every use.

Popular Essential Oil Blends

Fresh Citrus

Combine lemon, sweet orange, and grapefruit essential oils.

Relaxing Lavender

Combine lavender and chamomile essential oils.

Clean Linen

Blend lavender, lemon, and eucalyptus essential oils.

Woodland

Combine cedarwood, pine, and fir needle essential oils.

Holiday Spice

Blend sweet orange, cinnamon leaf, and clove bud essential oils.

Cinnamon and clove oils are potent, so use them sparingly and follow the manufacturers’ safety directions.

Notes

Shake the bottle thoroughly before every use because essential oils naturally separate from water.

Measure the essential oils by individual drops. Dropper sizes vary, so a certain number of full droppers may not equal 30 drops.

Distilled water is recommended for the longest possible freshness.

Filtered water may be used when the spray is prepared in a small batch and used promptly.

Label the bottle with its ingredients and preparation date. Discard the spray if its color, odor, or appearance changes.

Rubbing alcohol and surgical spirits may be flammable. Keep the spray away from open flames, sparks, heat sources, and hot surfaces.

Avoid spraying the mixture directly onto skin, pets, plants, food, electronics, polished surfaces, painted surfaces, or delicate fabrics.

Test the spray on an inconspicuous area before using it near fabric, flooring, furniture, or finished surfaces.

Use the spray sparingly in a well-ventilated area. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets, and do not ingest it.

Essential oils vary in composition and concentration. Review each manufacturer’s safety directions and confirm that the selected oils are appropriate for the intended environment. Take additional care in homes with children, pets, pregnant individuals, people with asthma, or anyone with fragrance sensitivities.

Some essential oils can be harmful to pets, even when used in room sprays. Consult a veterinarian before using essential oils around cats, dogs, birds, or other animals.

Store the spray tightly closed in a cool, dark place to help protect it from heat and light.
