Refreshing Basil Cucumber Vodka Gimlet Recipe

Ingredients

Basil Simple Syrup

1 cup water

1 cup granulated sugar

20 fresh basil sprigs

Basil Cucumber Vodka Gimlet

5 ounces vodka

1 ounce fresh lime juice

1 ounce basil simple syrup

1 small cucumber, sliced, or ½ large cucumber, sliced

Ice, for serving

Cucumber slices, for garnish

Fresh basil sprigs, for garnish

Preparation

Prepare the Basil Simple Syrup

In a small saucepan, combine the water and granulated sugar. Place the pan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally until the sugar has completely dissolved.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and immediately add the fresh basil sprigs. Allow the basil to steep in the warm syrup for at least 20 minutes. This process infuses the syrup with a vibrant herbal flavor and fresh aroma.

Once the syrup has cooled slightly, strain out the basil leaves and transfer the syrup to a clean jar or airtight container. Refrigerate until completely chilled before using.

Muddle the Cucumber

Add the cucumber slices to the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Pour in the basil simple syrup and gently muddle the cucumber. This releases the cucumber’s natural juices and creates the fresh, cooling flavor that makes this cocktail so refreshing.

Avoid over-muddling, as this can make the cucumber bitter. A few gentle presses are all that is needed.

Shake the Cocktail

Add the fresh lime juice and vodka to the cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15 to 20 seconds. Shaking thoroughly chills the cocktail while blending all of the flavors together.

The fresh lime juice adds brightness and acidity that balances the sweetness of the syrup and the smoothness of the vodka.

Serve and Garnish

Fill serving glasses with fresh ice. Strain the cocktail into the glasses, or pour directly over the ice if you prefer a more rustic presentation with cucumber pieces included.

Garnish each glass with a cucumber slice and a fresh basil sprig. Serve immediately while cold and refreshing.

Notes

For the freshest flavor, use freshly squeezed lime juice rather than bottled juice.

English cucumbers are an excellent choice because they have fewer seeds and a milder flavor.

The basil simple syrup can be made several days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, add an extra splash of basil simple syrup.

For a sparkling variation, top each cocktail with a small amount of club soda or sparkling water just before serving.

You can also substitute gin for vodka to create a more traditional herbal-style gimlet.

Chilling the glasses before serving helps keep the cocktail colder for longer.
