Yield
About 1½ cups
Ingredients
1 (13.4-ounce) can dulce de leche
1 tablespoon dark rum
¼ cup water
Preparation
Step 1: Combine the Ingredients
Place the dulce de leche into a medium mixing bowl. Add the dark rum and water.
Step 2: Whisk Until Smooth
Whisk the ingredients together until the sauce is completely smooth and creamy. If the dulce de leche is very thick, warm it slightly in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds before whisking.
Step 3: Adjust the Consistency
If you prefer a thinner drizzle, whisk in an additional tablespoon of water until the desired consistency is reached. For a thicker topping, use slightly less water.
Step 4: Serve
Drizzle the sauce over chilled Tres Leches Cake, pound cake, ice cream, bread pudding, brownies, or fresh fruit. The topping can also be served on the side for guests to add as much as they like.
Notes
For a deeper caramel flavor, use a premium dulce de leche.
Dark rum adds warmth and complexity, but you can substitute vanilla extract or rum extract for an alcohol-free version.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Stir well before using, as the sauce may thicken when chilled.
This topping is delicious served warm or cold and pairs especially well with whipped cream, toasted coconut, cinnamon, and fresh berries.
