Rich and Hearty Homemade Bolognese Sauce Recipe

Rich and Hearty Homemade Bolognese Sauce Recipe

Make rich and hearty homemade Bolognese sauce with ground meat, crushed tomatoes, garlic, shallot, and Italian seasoning in only 40 minutes.

Rich, savory, and comforting, this Homemade Bolognese Sauce Recipe combines ground meat, crushed tomatoes, garlic, shallot, and Italian seasoning in a thick sauce made for pasta. As the ingredients simmer together, the meat absorbs the seasoned tomato flavor, creating a satisfying homemade dinner without hours of cooking.

This easy meat sauce is ready in about 40 minutes, making it a practical choice for busy weeknights, relaxed weekend meals, or casual family gatherings. Ground beef provides classic richness, ground turkey offers a lighter alternative, and Italian sausage gives the sauce an especially robust flavor. Choose your favorite option based on what you have available.

Serve this hearty Bolognese sauce over spaghetti, rigatoni, penne, fettuccine, or tagliatelle. It also works beautifully in lasagna, stuffed shells, and baked pasta casseroles. For a pasta-free meal, spoon it over creamy polenta, zucchini noodles, or roasted spaghetti squash. Because the sauce stores and reheats well, it is also ideal for meal preparation.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Yield Amount: 6 servings

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef, ground turkey, or Italian sausage
2 (28-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 shallot, finely chopped
1 bouillon cube, crumbled
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons garlic salt
2 tablespoons Italian seasoning

Directions

Step 1: Brown the Meat

Place a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the ground beef, ground turkey, or Italian sausage. Add the minced garlic, chopped shallot, crumbled bouillon cube, sugar, garlic salt, and Italian seasoning.

Cook the mixture for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently and breaking the meat into small, even crumbles.

Continue cooking until the meat is completely browned and the shallot is tender. If the meat releases an excessive amount of grease, carefully drain some of it before proceeding.

Step 2: Add the Crushed Tomatoes

Pour both cans of crushed tomatoes into the skillet or Dutch oven. Stir thoroughly, scraping across the bottom of the pan to incorporate the meat, garlic, shallot, seasonings, and any flavorful browned pieces.

Increase the heat if necessary and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Avoid allowing the sauce to boil vigorously because a gentle simmer will help the flavors blend without causing excessive splattering.

Step 3: Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat to low and simmer the Bolognese sauce uncovered for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally to keep the sauce from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

The sauce will gradually thicken as it cooks, while the tomatoes, herbs, aromatics, and meat develop a deeper, more balanced flavor. If you have additional time, you may simmer the sauce for up to 45 minutes for a richer result. Stir it occasionally and reduce the heat if it begins bubbling too strongly.

Step 4: Check the Consistency

Examine the consistency of the sauce before serving. If it is thicker than desired, stir in a small amount of water or reserved pasta cooking water. Add the liquid gradually so the sauce does not become too thin.

When serving the Bolognese with pasta, reserved pasta water can also help the sauce cling more evenly to the noodles and create a silkier texture.

Step 5: Taste and Adjust the Sauce

Taste the finished sauce and adjust the seasonings only if needed. Bouillon cubes and garlic salt can vary considerably in saltiness, so do not add extra salt before tasting.

If the tomatoes taste particularly acidic, stir in 1 additional teaspoon of sugar. Allow the sauce to simmer for another minute, then taste it again before making any further adjustments.

Step 6: Combine With Pasta

For the best distribution of sauce, add freshly cooked pasta directly to the skillet or Dutch oven. Toss gently until the noodles are evenly coated. If necessary, stir in a splash of reserved pasta water to loosen the sauce.

Alternatively, divide the pasta among individual bowls and spoon the hot Bolognese sauce over each serving.

Step 7: Garnish and Serve

Remove the sauce from the heat and serve it while hot. Garnish each portion with grated Parmesan cheese, fresh basil, or chopped parsley, if desired.

Complete the meal with garlic bread, warm gluten-free bread, or a crisp garden salad.

Notes

Ground beef produces a rich, classic meat sauce, while ground turkey creates a lighter version. Italian sausage contributes additional herbs, spices, and a more robust flavor.

For extra depth, use a combination of ground beef and Italian sausage. Keep the total quantity of meat at 1 pound so the ingredient proportions remain balanced.

Use good-quality crushed tomatoes because they create the foundation of the sauce. Different tomato brands can vary in acidity, sweetness, and thickness.

This is a convenient 40-minute sauce, but it can be simmered for up to 45 minutes if you prefer a thicker consistency and more developed flavor. Keep the heat low and stir occasionally during the longer cooking time.

Rigatoni, penne, fettuccine, tagliatelle, and spaghetti all pair well with this Bolognese. Pasta shapes with ridges or hollow centers are particularly good at capturing the tomato sauce and small pieces of seasoned meat.

The sauce can also be used as a filling for lasagna, stuffed pasta shells, or other baked pasta dishes. For a pasta-free serving option, spoon it over creamy polenta, zucchini noodles, or roasted spaghetti squash.

Allow leftover Bolognese sauce to cool before placing it in an airtight container. Refrigerate the sauce for up to 4 days.

For longer storage, transfer the cooled sauce to a freezer-safe container and freeze it for up to 3 months. Leave a little space at the top of the container because the sauce may expand as it freezes.

Thaw frozen sauce in the refrigerator. Reheat it gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until it is thoroughly heated. Add a small splash of water if the reheated sauce is too thick.

The recipe can be doubled for meal preparation or a larger gathering. Use a pot large enough to hold the additional ingredients comfortably and allow enough room for stirring.

When preparing this meal for someone with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, serve the sauce with certified gluten-free pasta and check the bouillon cube, Italian sausage, seasonings, and other packaged ingredients for appropriate gluten-free labeling. Prevent cross-contact during preparation and serving.
