Sweet and Savory Japanese BBQ Shrimp Bowl Recipe

Ingredients

1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
⅓ bottle Japanese barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon lightly crushed Sichuan peppercorns
1 teaspoon garlic granules
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 cups cooked jasmine or white rice

Optional Toppings
Sliced green onions
Sesame seeds
Steamed broccoli
Snap peas
Sautéed Bok choy
Shredded cabbage
Lime wedges

Preparation

Step 1: Cook the Rice

Prepare the jasmine or white rice according to the package directions. Keep the rice warm while preparing the shrimp so everything is ready to serve at the same time.

Step 2: Season the Shrimp

Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels to help them cook evenly. Season both sides with the salt, black pepper, garlic granules, and lightly crushed Sichuan peppercorns until evenly coated.

Step 3: Prepare the Sauce

In a small bowl, whisk together the Japanese barbecue sauce and honey until smooth. Set the sauce aside while the shrimp cooks.

Step 4: Cook the Shrimp

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and lightly coat the pan with oil. Arrange the shrimp in a single layer and cook for 1 to 2 minutes per side, or until they begin turning pink and opaque.

Step 5: Glaze the Shrimp

Pour the Japanese barbecue sauce mixture into the skillet. Toss the shrimp gently to coat each piece evenly. Continue cooking for another 1 to 2 minutes, allowing the sauce to simmer and thicken into a glossy glaze. Remove the skillet from the heat as soon as the shrimp are fully cooked to keep them tender and juicy.

Step 6: Assemble the Bowls

Divide the warm cooked rice evenly among four serving bowls. Spoon the glazed shrimp over the rice and drizzle the remaining sauce from the skillet over each serving for maximum flavor.

Step 7: Garnish and Serve

Finish each bowl with sliced green onions, sesame seeds, or your favorite vegetables. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Shrimp cooks very quickly and can become rubbery if overcooked. Remove it from the heat as soon as it turns pink and opaque.

For a milder flavor, reduce the amount of Sichuan peppercorns or replace them with freshly cracked black pepper.

Add grated fresh ginger to the sauce for extra depth of flavor, or stir in a pinch of red pepper flakes for additional heat.

This shrimp bowl pairs beautifully with steamed broccoli, snap peas, bok choy, edamame, or shredded cabbage for a complete meal.

Brown rice, sushi rice, or cauliflower rice can be substituted for jasmine rice depending on your preference.

Always verify that your Japanese barbecue sauce is labeled gluten-free if preparing this recipe for someone with gluten sensitivities.

Storage

Store leftover shrimp and rice separately or together in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Reheat gently in a skillet over medium-low heat or in the microwave in short intervals until warmed through. Avoid overheating the shrimp to maintain its tender texture. This recipe is not recommended for freezing because cooked shrimp can become tough after thawing.
