Gluten-Free Lasagne al Forno (Italian Beef Lasagna) Recipe

Ingredients

For the Lasagna

1 package gluten-free lasagna noodles, cooked according to package directions, or homemade gluten-free lasagna noodles

For the Ricotta Cheese Mixture

1 (15-ounce) container ricotta cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

4 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon Italian seasoning

For Assembly

4 to 5 cups prepared gluten-free Italian beef meat sauce

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

Additional Parmesan cheese for topping, if desired

Preparation

Prepare the Ricotta Mixture

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well blended. Set aside.

Prepare the Oven and Baking Dish

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and make serving easier.

Assemble the Lasagna

Spread 1 cup of the prepared meat sauce evenly across the bottom of the baking dish.

Arrange 3 to 4 gluten-free lasagna noodles over the sauce, creating a single layer.

Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture evenly over the noodles.

Top the cheese layer with 1 cup of meat sauce, spreading it gently to cover the ricotta mixture.

Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce.

Add another layer of noodles.

Spread the remaining ricotta mixture evenly over the noodles.

Cover with another cup of meat sauce.

Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese over the sauce.

Finish with a final layer of noodles and spread the remaining meat sauce over the top, ensuring the noodles are completely covered. This helps prevent them from drying out during baking.

If desired, sprinkle a little extra Parmesan cheese over the top for additional flavor and a golden finish.

Bake the Lasagna

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Be sure the foil does not touch the cheese topping.

Bake for 50 minutes.

Carefully remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden around the edges.

Rest Before Serving

Remove the lasagna from the oven and allow it to rest for 10 to 15 minutes before slicing. This resting period helps the layers set, making it easier to cut and serve clean portions.

Serve warm with a fresh garden salad, roasted vegetables, or gluten-free garlic bread for a complete Italian-inspired meal.

Notes

For the best texture, slightly undercook the gluten-free lasagna noodles before assembling the lasagna. They will continue cooking while baking.

Homemade gluten-free lasagna noodles work beautifully in this recipe and provide an authentic Italian texture.

The lasagna can be assembled up to one day in advance and stored in the refrigerator before baking.

Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

This gluten-free beef lasagna freezes exceptionally well. Allow it to cool completely, wrap tightly, and freeze for up to 3 months.

For an extra-rich flavor, use a combination of ground beef and Italian sausage in the meat sauce.
